Why Concrete? An Honest Look for Anchorage, AK

Asphalt and gravel are common in Anchorage for good reasons, and concrete is not always the right answer. It earns its place on a drained base, where it outlasts both and shrugs off studded tires. We tell you which fits your ground.

Concrete is not the automatic choice in Anchorage, and we would sooner tell you that than sell you the wrong surface. Most driveways here are asphalt or gravel. Asphalt costs less up front and flexes a little when the ground heaves. Gravel is cheap and can be regraded every spring. Concrete costs more at the start and asks for a better base.

What you get for that is life span and low upkeep. A concrete slab on a drained gravel base does not rut under studded tires the way asphalt does, does not need seal coating every few years, and does not track into the garage like gravel. It gives a hard, flat floor for a garage or shop, a clean patio and safe steps. For those uses there is no real substitute.

Where concrete is the wrong answer is on ground that cannot be fixed at a sensible cost: deep peat, a wet area with nowhere to drain, a long rural driveway where asphalt or gravel does the job for a fraction of the money. On a site visit we look at the soil, the slope and how you use the space, and we say so if another material fits better.

Why concrete? in Anchorage: common questions

Is concrete or asphalt better for an Anchorage driveway?

Asphalt is cheaper to put in and more forgiving of frost movement. Concrete lasts longer, resists studded tire ruts and needs less upkeep, but only on a well-drained base. On good gravel ground concrete is a strong choice. On poor ground asphalt is often wiser.

Does concrete crack more in cold climates?

It is under more stress, so details matter more: air-entrained mix, drained base, joints at the right spacing and no deicer the first winter. Built that way, it performs well in Alaska.

Is concrete harder to keep clear of snow?

No. A broom-finished slab shovels and plows cleanly and has no loose stones to throw. Dark asphalt melts off a little faster in spring sun, which is the one small edge it has.

Great Company to work with. They provided detailed and fair pricing for a coloured, stamped concrete job at a residential location. The job was completed on time, the site was kept tidy, and excellent workmanship. Well done, The Anchorage Concrete Company.
