Concrete Removal in Anchorage, AK

We cut, break and haul away old driveways, patios, walks and slabs in Anchorage. Frost-prone soil under the old slab comes out too when a new pour follows. An Alaska Digline 811 locate is requested before any digging.

Old concrete has to come out before new concrete goes in, and it is also taken out for its own sake: a cracked patio the owner wants turned into lawn, a slab over a failed pipe, an old fuel tank pad. We saw-cut a clean line where the removal stops, break the concrete with a machine sized for the yard, load it and haul it away for recycling or disposal.

The season affects this work in Anchorage. Frozen ground is hard to dig and impossible to compact, so removal that will be followed by a new pour is done after the thaw. What we find under the slab decides the next step. Old slabs here were often poured on topsoil, peat or frost-prone silt, and that material has to come out as well if the new slab is going to last.

Before any digging, a locate request goes to Alaska Digline through 811, which state law requires at least two working days ahead. The utilities mark their own lines for free. They do not mark private lines, such as power to a detached garage, a yard light, a propane line or a heat trace cable, so we ask you about those. Removal is its own line on our quote.

Concrete removal in Anchorage: common questions

Can you remove just part of a driveway?

Yes. We cut along an existing joint or a straight saw line so the remaining slab has a clean edge. The new section is then tied or doweled to the old one where that makes sense.

What happens to the old concrete?

It is hauled off site. Clean broken concrete is commonly crushed and reused as fill or base material in this area. Disposal is included in the removal price on our quote.

Can concrete be removed in winter?

Breaking it out is possible in winter, but the ground beneath is frozen, so it cannot be graded or compacted for a new slab until it thaws. For a replacement job we normally do both in the warm season.

Great Company to work with. They provided detailed and fair pricing for a coloured, stamped concrete job at a residential location. The job was completed on time, the site was kept tidy, and excellent workmanship. Well done, The Anchorage Concrete Company.
